The Roman Catholic parish church Maria Osterwitz is surrounded by an old churchyard wall in a beautiful mountain location in Osterwitz in the municipality Deutschlandsberg in the district of Deutschlandsberg in Styria . The parish church and pilgrimage church , consecrated to the Sorrowful Mother of God , belonged to the dean's office in Deutschlandsberg in the diocese of Graz-Seckau until the end of August 2018 ; since this dean's office was closed, it has been located in the pastoral care area of south-western Styria. The church is a listed building .

history

A church was mentioned in documents in 1382, and in 1480 the Turks destroyed the church building. Today's church is late Gothic with baroque side aisles, probably from 1749. The chapel north of the choir was possibly built in 1720 with Sebastian Tengg.

In 1513 the first bell for the church was purchased. The sovereign's visitation in 1529, which for the parish on 19 and 20 June 1529 in Stainz took place, called as pastor Mr. Primus Marhär and has no complaints: "Is cain khlag still under beschwardt inside, in the faith as of alldter etc." When The number of communion visitors is the high number of 1200 for the small community, which results from its function as a place of pilgrimage.

In 1532 the church was destroyed again by the Turks. It was rebuilt in 1534: on October 22, 1534, Philipp Renner consecrated a bell as coadjutor of Lavant Bishop Leonhard Peurl . The next day he renewed the consecration of the church, which was consecrated to the " Immaculate Virgin Mary in der Osterwitz" ("intemerate virginis Marie in der Osterwitz"), and held a confirmation . The seal used shows St. Andrew with the St. Andrew's cross in a niche , the figure of the bishop kneeling in front of him. The characters RENNER DEI GRACIA are still preserved from the inscription. The visitation in 1544/45 did not concern itself with the parish.

Osterwitz became increasingly a place of pilgrimage because the statue of Mary is said to have brought the plague to an end during the plague epidemic in 1680. Even when this plague flared up again in 1713, the miraculous image was praised because it supposedly offered safe protection from the plague and other calamities.

architecture

The wide and high choir with a five-eighth closure with a ribbed vault on five-eighth wall services with round keystones. The slightly adjusted front arch is baroque. The two-bay nave in the width of the choir has a rich ribbed vault spanning the bay in a bent row on five-eighth wall services with round bases. The lower two-bay baroque side aisles have cross vaults.

The mighty gothic west tower with three storeys separated by coffin cornices has ogival double sound windows and wears an onion helmet.

Furnishing

The classical high altar was built between 1780 and 1800 with a free-standing tabernacle and was restored in 1922. The statues are close to the sculptor Josef Pogner. The late Gothic statue of grace Pietà around 1500 was restored in 1958. The two side altars in the style of the Rococo St. Joseph and Anna from the third quarter of the 18th century carry remarkable statues. The Sebastian altar in the side aisle is also Rococo. The Valentine's altar in the north chapel is from the second quarter of the 18th century.

Thomas Bell, consecrated in 1902

The image of St. Aloysius shows the signature Franz Hierliz 1758 in a rich frame, the picture of St. Franz Xaver in 1749.

In 1902 a bell was consecrated, which was dedicated to St. Thomas. It was financed by the farmer Thomas Rempitsch. This was recorded on the inscription on the bell.

In 1937 the Hopferwieser brothers built an organ for the church. In 2012 a new organ was inaugurated on July 15th, it has 866 pipes and 13 registers . It replaced the Hopferwieser organ, which had become defective.
