The Roman Catholic parish church Sachsenburg stands outside the curtain wall on the Vormarkt in the northeast of Sachsenburg . It is consecrated to St. Margaret . In 1425 a Corpus Christi brotherhood was approved in Sachsenburg. In 1449 Pope Nicholas V elevated the church to a parish church. According to the inscription on the arch of the west portal, the construction of the church was completed in 1510.

Building description

The medium-sized late Gothic church consists of a three-bay nave and a retracted, two-bay choir with a three-eighth end. Delicate, triangular buttresses support the end of the choir. At the southwest corner of the nave there is a single, massive support pillar. The mighty tower on the north side of the choir with slits in the wall and arched sound windows is crowned by a pointed gable helmet. The west portal and the south side portal are profiled pointed arches. A late Gothic door knocker and a key catch have been preserved on the southern door. Heraldic grave slabs from 1440, 1678, 1736 and 1793 are walled into the outer wall. In the floor of the west portal is the coat of arms grave slab of Paulus Rotellxum from the 15th century.

Frescoes

A star rib vault rests on sturdy pillars above the nave . The compartments of the vault end in brackets. The pillars have recesses for console figures in the middle third. The keystones are painted with rosettes and coats of arms. A late baroque organ stands on the wooden west gallery . A pointed, grooved triumphal arch connects the nave with the choir. In the choir, a ribbed vault rises on pillars with semicircular templates and capital rings. The vault paintings date from the beginning of the 16th century. The painting above the sacristy door on the north wall of the choir shows the Annunciation , the Visitation , the birth of Christ , Jesus teaches in the temple, the discovery in the temple and a donor inscription. The frescoes from around 1500 were probably renewed in the first quarter of the 16th century. The nave has three pointed arch windows on the south side, the choir has four slender arched windows.

The high altar from 1677 consists of a large aedicule with pilasters on a high base and a blasted segmented gable with a large cartilage cartouche as an attachment. The foliage decoration on the side was added around 1720/1730. The main picture shows St. Margaret, the top picture shows the Holy Trinity . The tabernacle and candlesticks are from the 18th century. The side altars created in the second quarter, with evangelist medallions provided pulpit of the 18th century in the first quarter. The late Gothic baptismal font is crowned by a figure of John the Baptist from the 18th century. A crucifix from the 16th century hangs over the triumphal arch . Other features of the church include the choir Konsolfiguren of of plague Sebastian and Rochus from the mid-18th century, at the triumphal arch wall, the Konsolfiguren of Saints Joseph and Joachim from the mid-18th century, the nave pillars in 1700 created sculptures of a Man of Sorrows and of a Sorrowful Mother of God and the console figure of St. Leonhard, carved around 1420 and framed in baroque style .
