The Pferdebachtal is a five-kilometer-long valley in the Eichsfeld district in northwest Thuringia .

Location and course

The Pferdebachtal begins not far northwest of the Heiligenstadt district of Flinsberg at around ( 450  m above sea level ), runs in a northerly direction until shortly before the horse stream joins the Geislede at around ( 290  m above sea level ) on the south-eastern outskirts of Heilbad Heiligenstadt . The valley forms the eastern section of the Heiligenstädter Stadtwald (up to 467.5 m) and is part of the north-facing slope of the Upper Eichsfeld to the valley of the Leine . In the east it is bordered by the foothills of the waiting mountain (515.9 m) and the Mittelberg (419.2 m). The entire valley location is accessed from the L 1006 state road.

nature

The valley is predominantly forested (mixed beech forest), especially in the lower valley areas there are also meadows and areas for fruit growing. The rock layers of the shell limestone are cut into the valley slopes. At the Egelsburg there are several slides in the shell limestone that lead to a crevice with a small cave. The forecast according to it there used to be a castle have been. Upper red sandstone is located in the lower section of the valley.

Numerous small side valleys flow into the Pferdebachtal:

  • left: Wolfental, Schellhasengraben, Düstertal, Langes Tal
  • on the right: Kirchgraben, Mollengrund.

Some of them lead smaller tributaries to the horse stream. The best known are the nine fountains at the exit of the Long Valley , where there is a small recreation area with a pond. There is a larger fish pond below the Schellhasengraben.

history

The Pferdebach and its valley are first mentioned in 1554 ( in the Pferdebach ) and 1634 ( in the Pferdtbach ). It is a valley where horses grazed.

In 1911, the construction of the Heiligenstadt – Schwebda railway line through the Pferdebachtal began and was put into operation in 1914. A separate stopping point was set up in the Pferdebachtal; in the upper section of the valley, due to the steep ascent, a rack section was first installed, which was later removed. The cessation of railway operations and the dismantling of the tracks took place in 1947 by order of the Soviet military administration .

In 1937, planning and construction of a fuel storage facility at the Pferdebachtal stop began by the Wirtschaftliche Forschungsgesellschaft mbH. The facilities, damaged by bombing at the end of the Second World War , were dismantled from 1946 onwards. The remaining buildings were then used as a children's holiday camp, and later as a hospital for the GDR border troops . Today there is a base of the technical relief organization . The extinguishing water ponds created with the tank farm are used by anglers.
