history

The association was founded as an umbrella organization through the merger of the previously two independent associations, the Association of Riding and Driving Clubs Hesse-Nassau (South Hesse) and the Association of Riding and Driving Clubs in Kurhessen-Waldeck (North Hesse). The previous associations continue to exist as regional associations. When the association was founded in 1957, the association had around 7200 members.

The foundation fell in the transition phase from agricultural to sport-oriented horse breeding. While the total number of horses steadily decreased, the proportion of organized riders increased. With breeders and keepers, the trend towards sport horses led to increased breeding of warm-blooded horses compared to cold-blooded horses . The association also supports the construction of equestrian facilities such as riding arenas.

In 1969 it was decided to set up high-performance centers in Dillenburg, Kassel and Darmstadt in order to increase professionalism . Since 1970 the number of horses in Hessen has increased again. In 1970 only 22,116 horses were recorded, the current figure is 60,439. Until 1991, the association was a co-host of the International Festival Hall Horse Show in Frankfurt .
