Phalaenopsis finleyi is a species of orchid from the genus Phalaenopsis , named in honor of the orchid cultivator Roy Finley from Florida , USA .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Phalaenopsis finleyi grows as a perennial herbaceous plant . It mainly thrives as an epiphyte . It has a monopodial , short stem axis . The 2 to 4 rather fleshy light to deep green leaves are about 15 cm and up to 9 cm wide and elliptical.

Generative characteristics

In the relatively short inflorescences, there are usually several flowers that open one after the other and usually only one or two flowers are open at the same time. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic . The flower shape is particularly characteristic, which clearly distinguishes it from all other Phalaenopsis species. The sepals (sepals) and petals (petals) are strongly curved backwards from the base when the flower is open. The color of the flowers varies from milky white to yellowish white with longitudinal purple stripes of different widths (sometimes also brownish) on the petals and the central lobe of the lip ; these stripes are of different intensity.

After pollination, the petals wilt and the green-brownish capsule fruit when ripe is about 4 cm long.

distribution

Phalaenopsis finleyi is endemic to Thailand . So far only Phu Luang near Loei / Northern Thailand on the border with Laos , from where the type specimen originates, has been known to be found.

Botanical history

The first specimen of this species was discovered in 1987 by a collector on a mountain high above a river, which gave this plant to Mr. Suphachadiwong passed on. A color photos, a single flower and a report found the plant described G. silk thread the plant in 1988 as Kingidium minus in Opera Botanica 95. In the course of revising the genus Phalaenopsis was made in 2001 by EA Christenson, a new combination of Phalaenopsis minus (he has the entire genus Kingidium integrated into Phalaenopsis ). 'Minus' as an earlier epithet for Kingidium no longer suited the new feminine genus name Phalaenopsis . The description was quickly corrected and 'minus' changed to the feminine epithet 'minor'. Here, however, the problem arose that a Phalaenopsis minor had already been described in 1988 - Christenson's description was therefore invalid. Finally, this species was renamed Phalaenopsis finleyi again in 2011 by EA Christenson .
