Jakob Kaschauer (also Jacob von Kaschau and Jakub z Košíc ) (* probably around 1400 in Kaschau (Košice); † between March 23 and August 29, 1463 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor, painter and glass painter. The family name or nickname indicates an origin from the then Upper Hungarian city ​​of Kaschau (Hungarian. Kassa , today: Košice).

Life

The work of Jakob Kaschauer can be traced back to 1429 at the Dombauhütte St. Stephan in Vienna. Kaschauer ran a painting, carving and glass painting workshop in Vienna.

The Freising Prince-Bishop Nicodemus della Scala had carved figures ordered from Kaschau for a high altar of the Freising Cathedral donated by him in 1443 . The Virgin Mary and the figure of St. Korbinian (both now in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich ), the figure of St. Sigismund (on loan from the Landesmuseum Württemberg in the Bavarian National Museum) and a donor figure (on loan from the Dombergmuseum Freising in the Bavarian National Museum).

From 1445 to 1448 Jakob Kaschauer created the panels for the huge high altar in the Church of St. Michael in Vienna.

Friedrich III. was Roman-German King from 1440 and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1452 and from 1440 expanded Wiener Neustadt as his residence and brought in artists such as Jakob Kaschauer, Peter von Pusica and Niclas Gerhaert van Leyden .

Kaschauer was married to Margareta Hirschvogel from Nuremberg († 1480) and was buried in the crypt of the Michaelerkirche in Vienna.

In 1953 the Kaschauerplatz in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.
