Das Böse II (Original title: Phantasm II ; German alternative title Phantasm II: Das Böse II ) is an American horror film with science fiction elements from 1988 and the sequel to the film Phantasm . The role of Mike Pearson was taken on by James LeGros . The film opened in German cinemas on February 23, 1989.

action

Seven years ago, the teenager Mike met the Tall Man, who brought corpses to life in the Morningside village cemetery, shrunk them to half size, and then transported them to another dimension where they would serve as slaves . Mike was able to stop the Tall Man at the time, but the Tall Man returned to continue his work. After this incident, Mike was admitted to a mental hospital.

After his discharge from the clinic, Mike goes to his friend Reggie, who at the time fought at his side against the Tall Man. The two decide to pursue the Tall Man who leaves devastated cities with empty cemeteries. In search of the Tall Man, Mike and Reggie pick up a hitchhiker named Alchemy. Mike often has visions of a girl named Liz Reynolds who knows where the Tall Man is.

Liz lives with her grandparents. When her grandfather Alex dies, her grandmother falls into deep grief. She is all the more shocked to see how the pastor rams a knife into her husband's corpse. The pastor did this because he knew about the resurrected corpses and tried in this way to prevent his grandfather from being resurrected. During the night he wakes up anyway and kidnaps his wife.

Liz finds out about this and goes to the morgue, where she also meets the pastor. However , his left ear is sawed off by a so-called sphere , a silver ball from which pointed blades and all sorts of other murderous tools can shoot out . Eventually the Sphere kills him. Liz now telepathically contacts Mike, who is supposed to come to the rescue. Mike and Reggie can get to the morgue in time for this. They take her to an abandoned house. After Liz and Mike go upstairs, Alchemy seduces Reggie and they go upstairs too. The two are disturbed when Reggie hears a loud bang: The Tall Man has kidnapped Liz.

Reggie and Mike drive to the morgue and tell Alchemy to drive away. Liz was kidnapped by a gravedigger possessed by Tall Man. He tries to burn Liz, but she can free herself and lead the gravedigger to her intended fate.

Mike and Reggie are in a car accident on the way to the morgue, in which the car explodes. On arrival they meet Liz, but are stopped by another man possessed with an ax. The sphere ensures its demise.

Reggie, Liz and Mike can finally, with the help of the Sphere, which is in the hand of the possessed, open a room in which there is a gateway to the dimension of Tall Man. Reggie and Mike are almost pulled into the other dimension while Liz is tied to a stretcher by Tall Man. The three can eventually kill the Tall Man.

Alchemy picks them up by car. However, it turns out she's obsessed too. She kills Reggie and throws his body out of the car. At first Mike and Liz think that everything is just a dream . But they find out that this is not the case when the Tall Man suddenly appears and pulls her through the window.

criticism

"[...] hopelessly drowning in special effects sequel, which only attracts attention through repulsive carnage."

“The advantage of the second part, also staged by Don Coscarelli, is the consistent telling of the previously interesting story, although towards the end the impression of an unwanted remake arises, which is almost covered up by the use of special graphic effects. Of course, these are cut in the German version in exactly those places where the film series justified its reputation as an innovator: namely with the flying metal balls, which this time drill more than just holes in the end walls. The uncouth, but refreshing staging style of the debut has given way to a tendency towards commercialization this time, whereby of course the obligatory chain saw rattle is not saved either. "
