Phantom Below (OT: Tides of War ) is an American action drama directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith from 2005 .

An American submarine is attacked in the Sea of ​​Japan. Two crew members are killed and the boat is badly damaged. The commander, Commander Frank Habley, is certain that he had recently seen an unidentified, surfaced submarine, but nothing could be seen on the sonar. The Navy leadership does not believe the descriptions. But Habley continues to hold on to his view for which he is relieved of his command.

However, a short time later he was called back for a secret mission with the participation of the Navy intelligence service. With the help of a new detection method, the crew discovers strange movements under water. The commander suspects a specially camouflaged enemy submarine there and attacks it with torpedoes , disregarding the original order. The operation is successful and the enemy submarine is destroyed.

After the end of the mission, Commander Habley is publicly honored for his special services on the last mission and is thus fully rehabilitated. He is retiring after 21 years of service.
