action
Several employees disappear in the newly opened, ultra-modern Midwood shopping center. One of them is found dead and horribly beaten up on the desk of the owner, Harv Posner.
At the same time, the young Melody Austin, who also works at the Midwood, is showered by a stranger with gifts that clearly come from the mall's range. They have mixed feelings about their job. Because in the place where the huge shopping paradise now stands, the home of her great love Eric was just a year ago. But one night his house went up in flames for some unknown reason and he died in the fire.
She suspects that the house fire was not an accident and that Eric could still be alive, which is why she hires private detective Baldwin to investigate this matter. In the course of the investigation and further acts of violence, which are primarily the motive to harm Harv Posner, it turns out that the house fire in which Eric Matthews died was anything but an accident.
Posner had the plan for his new super mall ready and waiting. In fact, he owned almost all of the land, except for the Matthew house. Since the young Eric had repeatedly refused to sell his parents' house, Posner had it burned down in order to realize his business. What he did not plan, however, was that Eric had survived the fire badly disfigured and had taken up residence in the warehouses under the shopping center to wait for the right moment for his revenge - and to re-establish contact with his great love Melody.
When Eric reveals himself to her, covering his burns with a white half-mask, she is repulsed less because of his appearance, but more because of the gruesome murders he has committed. Hit hard by her rejection, he loses himself in a downright killing frenzy.
Eric, in his madness, plans to blow up the entire mall. But first he wants to take revenge on Posner. He strikes mercilessly during a gala party in honor of the Midwood opening. In the course of the argument, Eric kills Mayor Wilton, who had a relationship with Posner and only gave him the idea of the fire at the time.
He sets Harv Posner himself on fire with a flame thrower. This stumbles as a living torch against a shelf with propane gas bottles and an explosion occurs. This will also detonate the explosives that Eric has placed. The Midwood Shopping Center is destroyed in a huge explosion and Eric Matthews dies under the burning rubble.
