Phare de la Jument (Lighthouse of the Mare) is the name of a lighthouse on a rock two kilometers off the southwest tip of the island of Ouessant , which is about 20 kilometers off the coast of Brittany . Its range is between 19 and 21 nautical miles .

The island is in dangerous waters and is therefore now marked by no fewer than five lighthouses. The construction of the Phare de la Jument goes back to a shipwreck on June 17, 1896, which killed 243 of the 246 people on board. Charles Eugène Potron decreed in his will, under the impression of the shipwreck of the English ship Drummond Castle , which had crashed on the cliffs off the Ile d'Ouessant, that a lighthouse should be built at the dangerous place for 400,000 francs from his estate.

Construction of the octagonal tower, which would eventually cost 850,000 francs, began in 1904, and the first beacon was put into operation in 1911, but the tower was not finally completed and secured until 1940. It has a height of 47.40 m and one Beam range of 19-21 miles and is anchored in the rock with several steel cables.

On December 21, 1989, Jean Guichard took his famous photograph of this lighthouse - for which he received second prize in the World Press Photo Awards (Press Photo of the Year ) - which shows the lighthouse keeper Théodore Malgorne, a trained auto mechanic, on the lower walkway. Just as he stepped out the door, a huge wave hit the tower from the rear, piled up by a storm of about 10 Beaufort . Malgorne heard the sound of Guichard's helicopter, so he went outside. He recognized his mistake in time and escaped unharmed back into the stairwell of the building before the wave could crash over him. Waves of this type can rock the tower and cause significant damage. Occasionally, windows were destroyed, the railing bent and even the entrance door torn out.

The tower has been automated since 1991 and is no longer inhabited. Théodore Malgorne has since worked at the Phare du Créac'h lighthouse on the Ile d'Ouessant.

In the movie The The Light of Philippe Lioret , the tower serves as backdrop.

A museum on the island provides information about the history of the lighthouses on l'Ouessant.
