José Philadelpho de Barros e Azevedo (born March  13, 1894 in Rio de Janeiro , †  May 7, 1951 in The Hague ) was a Brazilian lawyer . From 1937 he worked as a professor of civil law at the Faculdade Nacional de Direito and served as a judge at the International Court of Justice from 1946 until his death .

Life

Philadelpho Azevedo was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1894 and graduated from the Colégio Pedro II with a Baccalauréat in 1910 . He then completed a law degree at the Faculdade de Ciências Jurídicas e Sociais in his hometown, which he completed in 1914 with a doctorate . After studying in Paris, he worked from 1917 as a professor of philosophy at the Colégio Pedro II in Rio de Janeiro and from 1932 as a lecturer and from 1937 as a professor of civil law at the Faculdade Nacional de Direito .

In 1942 he was appointed judge of the Brazilian Supreme Court, and he was temporarily mayor of Rio de Janeiro. In addition, from 1925 to 1929 he worked for the National Education Council and from 1934 to 1936 as a public prosecutor in the former Federal District of Rio de Janeiro , in 1937 and 1938 he served as President of the Institute of Brazilian Lawyers. He also held various positions in government commissions between 1937 and 1939, and from October 1945 to January 1946 he was prefect of the José Linhares government in the Federal District .

After the end of World War II , he became a judge at the newly established International Court of Justice in The Hague in 1946 , where he served until his death. He died in The Hague in 1951, making him the first judge in the history of the court to die before the end of his term of office. His compatriot Levi Carneiro was elected to succeed him.
