Philip Pearlstein (born May 24, 1924 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American painter , printmaker and draftsman .

Pearlstein is a fellow student of Andy Warhol and studied with him from 1945 at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (today's Carnegie Mellon University ) in Pittsburg. Pearlstein returned from the war and had artistic ambitions from an early age. As early as 1943, at the age of nineteen, he was drafted into military service and shipped to Italy for an assignment . During his military service he assists in the development and drawing of strategic maps and diagrams. In 1946 he returned to the USA to complete his studies at Carnegie alongside Warhol.

Pearlstein had published illustrations for Life magazine back in 1941 . After completing his studies in 1947, Pearlstein visited New York City several times with Warhol, before finally settling in the city in 1948 with his future wife Dorothy Cantor and his two artist colleagues Warhol and Arthur Elias . In the summer of 1949, both Warhol and Pearlstein began to acquire commissioned work from the New York studios and advertising agencies , whereby the beginning self-promoter Warhol was to be more successful. Philip Pearlstein and Dorothy Cantor married in 1950. Pearlstein started working again for Life Magazine in 1950 . 1969 his first color lithographs are published.

Philip Pearlstein is primarily known for his photo-realistic nude paintings , which he places as lifeless bodies in truncated image segments. In Germany, his works found their way into the collections of the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin-Dahlem or the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation . His works are also represented in numerous international museums.

Pearlstein was unable to build on the meteoric success of his fellow student Andy Warhol; However, alongside Alex Katz, he is one of the most famous contemporary American painters of realism . He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1982 . In 1988 Philip Pearlstein was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York , and in 1998 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
