The Philip SW Goldson International Airport (also: Belize International Airport ) is the airport of the city of Belize City and the main international airport of Belize . It is located about 15 km from Belize City in Ladyville .
history
The airport was built in 1943 with a 5,000 ft (1,524 m ) long runway , a taxiway and a small apron . In 1944 a terminal was built, which was officially opened on January 15, 1945. It is named after the late Belizean politician and editor Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson .
The runway has now been extended to 7,100 ft (2,164 m) and the apron has been enlarged to 57,200 m². It is planned to expand the runway as well as the apron and terminal in order to be able to handle large-capacity aircraft. The airport has an airport fire and rescue service .
On April 1, 2004, the Belize Airport Concession Company , a consortium of Belizean investors, took over the operation of the airport as part of the privatization . The operating license obliges the company, among other things, to expand the airport. The airport is still owned by the Belize Airports Authority .
