Philipp Dott (born July 1, 1912 in Neuwied , † May 1, 1970 in Koblenz ) was a German painter and sgraffito artist.

Life

Philipp Dott grew up with his younger brother Heinrich (1914–1942) in their parents' house in Koblenz-Metternich , Raiffeisenstrasse. 118 on. Like his father, he learned the carpentry trade . Even in his youth Dott started as an autodidact with painting and sculpture . In 1941 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht during World War II . a. he was a soldier in Metz and returned home from French captivity in Attichy in 1946.

Artistic creation

After being a prisoner of war numerous meaningful pictures about "War and Death" were created. Since then Dott has lived as a freelance artist in his parents' house. He painted native motifs, portraits and still lifes in oils , watercolors and gouaches . In the 1950s, Dott produced relief-like works (sgraffito) on numerous house walls in Koblenz and the surrounding area as commissioned works by the city, municipalities and private individuals. He mastered the scratch-cleaning technique (sgraffito) so well that it was preserved in shape and color for decades. In 1963, Dott received the order from the Güls parish to design the chapel and the Way of the Cross at Gülser Heyerberg with his sgraffito technique. This was followed by sgraffiti on the town hall in Güls, the Brothers House St. Josef Hospital in Koblenz and many more.

From 1959 to 1964 he worked as a draftsman and caricaturist for the Rhein-Post in Oberlahnstein . In 1966 he went on a study trip to Paris. In exchange with other artists, he expanded his painting skills.

  • December 2014 to March 2015: In the Middle Rhine Museum Koblenz for the first time since 1970 a retrospective with over 30 originals from the fund of the Middle Rhine Museum and the collector couple Marita and Hermann Warnke.
  • 1969: Large exhibition with the annual work of 1969 in the Rhein-Mosel-Halle Koblenz. The Middle Rhine Museum in Koblenz bought some paintings and a sculpture by Philipp Dott.
