Johann Adam Philipp Hepp (born October 26, 1797 in Kaiserslautern , † February 5, 1867 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German doctor , botanist and lichen researcher . As chairman of the Neustadt branch committee of the German Press and Fatherland Association , he campaigned for the preservation of freedom of the press and expression in the Palatinate under Bavarian rule and was the keynote speaker at the Hambach Festival of 1832 .

Live and act

Philipp Hepp practiced around 1824 as an assistant doctor at the infirmary and insane asylum of the Royal Bavarian Rhine District in Frankenthal.

From 1826 to 1849 Hepp lived and practiced as a doctor in Neustadt an der Haardt . During this time he was chairman of the Neustadt branch committee of the “Press and Fatherland Association”. He was one of the signatories of the invitations to the Hambach Festival . For the festival he received the invited guest of honor Ludwig Börne together with the bookseller Philipp Christmann as a member of the festival committee. At the festival itself he gave the opening speech and a dinner speech at lunchtime. For his involvement in the Hambach Festival, he and twelve other people were indicted in 1833 before the extraordinary Assisengericht (jury court), which met in Landau and met from July 29 to August 16, 1833. This court came to an acquittal.

During his time in Neustadt he dealt with botany. The work " The lichens of Europe " was created in several volumes. As a result of his interest in the natural sciences, he co-founded Pollichia on October 6, 1840 in Bad Dürkheim , a research-based nature conservation association with a focus on Rhineland-Palatinate . From 1842 to 1849 he was its chairman.

In 1848, Hepp became the founder and chairman of the Neustadter Volksverein, the first local political association in the Palatinate. In the same year he agitated together with Ludwig Frey against August Lufft , who was the director of the royal government of the Palatinate, Chamber of the Interior, in Speyer. In 1848 he was a member of the preliminary parliament .

In January 1849 he became a member of the Bavarian State Parliament . From May he worked for the revolutionary government in the Palatinate as "Finance Minister". After the revolution of 1848/1849 was suppressed , Hepp was forced to flee to Switzerland.

There he lived first in the Enge and from 1865 in Hottingen in Zurich . When visiting his daughter in 1867, Hepp died in Frankfurt am Main.
