Philipp Langmann
Philipp Langmann (born February 5, 1862 in Brno , Austrian Empire ; died May 22, 1931 in Vienna ) was an Austrian writer.
Life
Philipp Langmann attended secondary school in Brno, studied chemical technology at the German Technical University in Brno and was then employed there as a scholarship holder. He went into private industry as a chemist and rose to factory manager in 1890. From 1891 on he was an official of the workers' accident insurance company in Brno and also worked as a writer. From 1901 he lived as a freelance writer in Vienna.
Langmann only had success with his first drama “Bartel Turaser” in 1897 on stage, with audiences and critics, and the play was also translated into English , for example by Mark Twain . Langmann received the Grillparzer Prize . The next few years, however, his dramas were rejected because Langmann was still considered a naturalist and thus outdated. He suffered material hardship because he did not succeed in at least getting back into a job.
