Philippe Burty has been a progressive art critic for the art magazine Gazette des Beaux-Arts since it was founded in 1859. He also wrote for La République Française and other magazines promoting new developments in the visual arts. During the 1850s, he was dedicated to supporting the contemporary art of etching , while in the following decade he published more on the decorative and applied arts. This activity brought him into contact with the art of the Orient , and he subsequently became an avid collector of Japanese art. The term Japonism was coined by him in 1872; he wrote many articles about the devotion to Japanese art and culture in France. He was also an early defender of the Impressionists against the attacks of the more conservative contemporaries.

Burty wrote articles about the French painter Eugène Delacroix and first published his correspondence in 1878. This was revised and expanded in a second edition in 1880. Burty himself was also an artist. He drew small sketches of landscapes in pencil or charcoal and created etchings.

Philippe Burty's daughter Madeleine married Charles Haviland, the owner of Haviland & Co. , a porcelain manufacturer in Limoges . Madeleine was the mother of the photographer and art critic Paul Burty Haviland and the painter and museum founder Frank Burty Haviland .
