Étienne Carjat
Étienne Carjat (born March 28, 1828 in Fareins in the Ain department , † March 19, 1906 in Paris ) was a French caricaturist , author and photographer who was known for his portraits of celebrities.
life and work
Étienne Carjat started out as a product designer and shared a passion for theater with his contemporary Nadar . In 1854 he published a series of lithographs entitled Le Théâtre à la ville .
In 1858 the photographer Pierre Petit trained him in portrait photography and Étienne Carjat opened a photo studio in 1861 on rue Laffitte in Paris.
Carjat portrayed a number of famous personalities from his environment, the French bohème , without any decorative elements in the background, which were common at the time . These included the writers Alexandre Dumas the Elder , Alexandre Dumas the Younger , Victor Hugo , Charles Baudelaire , Arthur Rimbaud , Émile Zola , the composers Georges Bizet , Giuseppe Verdi , Hector Berlioz , Rossini and the painters Pierre Puvis de Chavannes , William Wyld , Gustave Courbet , Ingres , Honoré Daumier and Eugène Delacroix . Carjat also photographed the actress Sarah Bernhardt , the pantomime Charles Deburau , the statesman Léon Gambetta and the historian Jules Michelet .
At first he used the albumen silver print as a photographic technique , which was replaced by the Woodbury type , which made mass production possible. B. was needed for book printing .
He was one of the editors of the magazines Le Diogène and Le Boulevard , published political poetry in the magazine La Commune and supported the Paris Commune .
In 1937, photographic works by Étienne Carjat were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City , and in 1977 his photographic work was shown at documenta 6 in Kassel in the 150 Years of Photography department .
His photographs are traded at Christie's and Sotheby's , among others .
