Amphoe Photharam ( Thai : อำเภอ โพธาราม ) is a district ( amphoe - administrative district) in the province of Ratchaburi . The Ratchaburi Province is located in the central region of Thailand .

Neighboring districts (from the east clockwise): Amphoe Bang Phae , Damnoen Saduak , Mueang Ratchaburi and Chom Bueng Ratchaburi Province, Amphoe Tha Muang of Kanchanaburi Province , Amphoe Ban Pong again in the province of Ratchaburi, and Amphoe Mueang Nakhon Pathom of Nakhon Pathom Province .

The main water resource is the Mae Nam Mae Klong (Mae Klong River) .

history

Photharam was already a district (Kwaeng) of the Müang Ratchaburi in the 19th century . In 1836 the district administration was transferred from the mouth of the Bang Tanod Canal ( Khlong Bang Tanod) to the eastern bank of the Mae Nam Mae Klong opposite Wat Chaloem At. On March 10, 1952, it was relocated again to its current location within the city of Photharam. In 1839 the English missionary D. Richardson toured the area and describes a large market where the Chinese offered dishes with tea leaves and people from the mountains (see Hill tribes (Thailand) ) offered tamarind in coconut oil . Siamese, Laotian and Vietnamese fishermen smoked fish in shady shelters, and there were sugar factories at the end of the town towards Kanchanaburi.

• Wat Khongkharam (Thai: วัด คงคา ราม ) - very old Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) on the banks of the Mae Klong with beautiful old wall paintings in the Ubosot .
• Wat Khanon (Thai: วัด ขนอน ) - Buddhist temple complex with a museum for figures made of cowhide of the courtly Thai shadow play Nang Yai (Thai: หนังใหญ่ ). From time to time there are also performances here.

• Khao Khwang (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล เขา ขวาง ) consisting of the complete Tambon Nang Kaeo and parts of the Tambon Chamrae, Tao Pun, Khao Cha-ngum.
• Chet Samian (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล เจ็ด เสมียน ) consisting of the complete tambon Chet Samian.
• Ban Lueak (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล บ้าน เลือก ) consisting of the complete tambon Ban Lueak.
• Nong Pho (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล หนอง โพ ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Nong Pho.
