Phyllis Coates

Phyllis Coates (actually Gypsie Ann Evarts Stell ; born January 15, 1927 in Wichita Falls , Texas ) is an American actress .

Life

Coates, who moved to Hollywood away from her family in Odessa , Texas as a teenager , began her career on comedian Ken Murray's vaudeville show , became a chorus girl and assisted Earl Carroll before touring with the United Service Organizations .

She got her first film experience in 1948 and played small roles on the screen a few times. From 1949 she was given the female lead in the comedic short film series So you want to be… for Joe MacDokes . Her second film in the So You Want to Be on the Radio series and her ninth film So You Think You're Not Guilty were nominated for an Oscar .

In 1951 Coates was the second actress to portray Lois Lane on screen (in the movie Superman and the Mole Men ) and who repeated in the first season (26 episodes, 1952/53) of the subsequent television series ( Adventures of Superman ) . When Coates had other film projects for the second season of Adventures of Superman , she was replaced by Noel Neill - the first actress in Lois Lane - for the rest of the series. She also starred in B-films , other television series and in serials , including many trash classics ; after 1966 it became quieter for her until she started to take advantage of offers again in 1988, not least in Superman - The Adventures of Lois & Clark , where she played Lois Lane's mother.

Coates was with director Richard Bare (eight months), Robert Nelms (three and a half years, one daughter), director Norman Tokar (three years, one son) and Dr. Howard Press (24 years old, one daughter) married.
