Physalis patula is a plant type from the genus of jujubes ( Physalis ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

Physalis patula is a one-year , herbaceous plant cm with a height between 10 and 150. The stems are angled in cross-section and have densely glandular hairs with about 0.2 to 1.0 mm long trichomes . The foliage leaves, which are also glandular and hairy, are 2 to 11.0 cm long, of which the petioles make up 0.5 to 3.4 cm. The leaf blades are elongated to narrowly elongated or rhombic, glandular hairy and 1.5 to 7.5 cm long and 0.5 to 4.0 cm wide. They are pointed towards the front, tapering to a point at the base or obliquely offset by up to 1.3 cm. The leaf margin is roughly serrated.

The flowers are on 2.5 to 9.0 mm long pedicels . The cup is long at the height of 3 to 5 mm, occupied tapered cup lobes and 1.5 to 2.0 mm wide; it has glandular hairs. The crown is colored yellow, measures 1.0 to 2.5 cm in diameter and is unspotted or marked with 5 individual brown or blue spots.

Filaments and anthers are colored blue, the anthers reach a length of 1.5 to 2.7 mm.

Fruits and seeds

On the fruit, the peduncle extends to 7 to 14 mm, the calyx is hairy glandular, clearly five-angled, 1.5 to 3.0 cm long and 1.0 to 3.0 cm wide and usually as long as it is wide. The calyx surrounds a berry about 1.0 to 1.3 mm in diameter , which is yellow when ripe and contains a large number of seeds . These are brown, fine-grained and about 2 mm in size.

Distribution and locations

The species is widespread in Mexico , it occurs in an area between the states of Chihuahua and Oaxaca . It grows there on dry highland locations at altitudes between 900 and 2700 on clay soil and is often found in the vicinity of cultivated areas.
