Physical is a 2020 song by British singer Dua Lipa . The second single from her second album Future Nostalgia was written by the artist herself together with KOZ , Clarence Coffee, Jr. and Sarah Hudson and produced by the former together with Jason Evigan .

Music and lyrics

Physical is a pop song that borrows heavily from the music of the 1980s , especially from the genre of synth pop , thanks to its driving, danceable rhythm and echoing synthesizers . The singer's inspiration for the song was the Olivia Newton-John hit of the same name , which is also quoted in the chorus, and the soundtrack for the movie Flashdance . In terms of content, the song describes the relationship between the first-person narrator and another person, which triggers exciting feelings and an adrenaline rush in her . In the chorus she sings about how she wants to make a fuss with her all night and asks her to dance as if she had no choice; she also expresses the desire for physical contact.

Music video

The video clip for Physical , which was directed by CANADA , shows Dua Lipa at the beginning in a discotheque completely illuminated with red lights , where she throws a man at a ball that serves as a decoration and begins to tear off his already opened vest with a jerk whereupon she touches his upper body with her hand and penetrates it. When she pulls it out again, she is holding a crystal heart. After this sequence, the colored light suddenly changes to neutrality and you can see that the room consists mainly of strongly contrasting gray and red tones (the latter are also worn by those present). The two protagonists and others in attendance begin to dance. Later other settings can be seen that are kept in eye-catching and striking colors and furnished extravagantly; once the actors are in front of a huge diamond , another time in a room full of icebergs . In one shot, the two main characters seem to be moving close to a deep abyss, but this only turns out to be painted on the floor. Individual short scenes showing Dua Lipa's hand holding the heart are drawn in the style of an anime .

criticism

Physical received positive reviews. The song has been compared to the music of Donna Summer , Daft Punk and Cerrone , among others , and described as the perfect summary of the strengths of his album as well as pop perfection. It would make an even clearer pastiche to the 1980s than their previously released songs Don't Start Now and Future Nostalgia , and would be as good for the gym as it is for the dance floor . Associations with the Olivia Newton-John song of the same name would be awakened in the listener without this being exactly copied; the track would loop for a long time after it was over. It was also praised that the song had a sexual touch, but without ever being explicit, and instead it stayed with evocative allusions.
