Pia Findeiß (born February 28, 1956 in Zwickau ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and since August 1, 2008 mayor of Zwickau.

Life

Findeiß studied in Leipzig, where she graduated from the DHfK as a certified sports teacher. After completing her studies, she worked as a trainer in the youth sector. In 1987 she received her doctorate. paed. From 1981 to 1994 she worked as a research assistant in the field of sports science at the Zwickau University of Education . From 1994 to 1997 she continued her education in social management . She was a member of the founding committee of the Philosophical Faculty of the TU Chemnitz / Zwickau and belonged to the main staff council of the Saxon State Ministry for Science and Art (SMWK). In addition, from 1994 to 2001, as mayor, she headed the Department of Health, Social Affairs and Youth and, after Jürgen Croy left, took over the Zwickau Department for Social Affairs and Culture. In the 2001 mayoral election, she was defeated by the CDU candidate Dietmar Vettermann . Because the CDU and SPD formed a coalition after the election, she remained a department head and at the same time became the mayor's first deputy.

For the mayor election in 2008, the outgoing mayor Dietmar Vettermann (formerly CDU) proposed her for this office, which caused a lot of explosive substance between the parties. In the runoff election on June 22, 2008, she was able to prevail against her competitors Frank Seidel (CDU) and Thomas Gerisch (Free Voters) with 59.7% of the votes. Since August 1st, 2008 she has been the mayor of the city of Zwickau.

Zwickau's Lord Mayor Pia Findeiß will resign from her position on July 31, 2020 and will retire.

Awards

In 2019 Pia Findeiß received the “to B remembered” award from the International Auschwitz Committee.
