Social management

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Social management is the management of organizations / companies in the social economy and non-profit areas, e.g. B. local authorities , a charity , a youth welfare office , association etc.

The tasks of social management have traditionally been performed by social workers , social pedagogues , pedagogues , psychologists without any further management knowledge or by lawyers and business administrators - often without any closer reference to the social area. As an independent professional title at university and college level, there was the Diplom-Sozialwirt . Social management links management with socio-educational and psychological knowledge. Social management was a theme in the 1980s and at that time related to questions of person-oriented leadership, motivation and goal setting.

term

In today's understanding, social management includes all management functions that are necessary for the management of social and / or non-profit organizations . From the business administration finance social organizations mission statement and concept development, to public relations , public relations , urban and social marketing, organizational development, human resource development , human resource management , project management , quality development and other disciplines taken over the management.

In contrast to management in other economic areas (e.g. sports management or media management ), social management takes into account numerous peculiarities of organizations in the social sector: the service character of social enterprises, the peculiarities of non-profit organizations and in particular welfare , the close integration into the law as well as the character of the services as merit goods . With the increasing spread of private commercial providers, social management is also referred to as management of the social economy companies. Against this background, social management can also be understood as a so-called special business administration for social enterprises or companies.

Some authors also understand social management as management with special consideration of people and human relationships in terms of human resources . However, this understanding does not apply specifically to social services organizations.

The approach of systemic social management takes particular account of the aspects of emotions, meaning and relationships, because when providing social services, the focus is on creating professional, empathic and trusting relationships with the service recipients. Systemic social management is based on the assumption that employees can only relate to clients in an unreserved, appreciative and empathic relationship if these values are also reflected in the culture of interaction between management and employees.

education

Social management is also offered as a social science degree, which is aimed at social workers, social pedagogues, pedagogues and similar professional groups who qualify for management tasks in social organizations and management tasks in the social economy and the public service . The four to five semester course is usually offered as a postgraduate course and usually ends with the academic degree "Master of Arts" or "Master of Social Management MSM". With regard to the study options, it is noticeable that an undergraduate degree in social management is primarily possible at universities of applied sciences, while the subject is hardly anchored at universities. In addition to the possibility of studying, various social management topics can also be learned while working in the form of further training.
