Piedras Negras is a city with 150,178 inhabitants (2010) and the seat of the municipality of the same name in the northeast of the Mexican state Coahuila .
The city is located on the Rio Grande (Spanish: Río Bravo del Norte ), which forms the border between Mexico and the United States , across from Eagle Pass , Texas . The two cities form a binational metropolitan region and are connected by two road bridges and one railway bridge. There is also an international airport on the territory of Piedras Negras .
Piedras Negras is the seat of a Catholic bishop and owns a cathedral that was built between 2002 and 2008.
history
The city of Piedras Negras was founded in 1849. She received in 1888 in honor of Mexican President Porfirio Díaz called Ciudad Porfirio Diaz , but was changed back again in 1911.
"Piedras Negras" means "black rocks" in German. The name comes from a coal deposit in the area. However, the mine closed after a fire in 1905.
On April 4, 2004, the Río Escondido (a tributary of the Rio Grande) overflowed its banks and killed about 80 people. On April 24, 2007, a tornado hit the two cities of Piedras Negras and Eagle Pass. As a result, there were three fatalities in Piedras Negras and seven in Eagle Pass, numerous injuries and severe damage.
