Pierre-François Bernier (born November 19, 1779 in La Rochelle , † June 15, 1803 ) was a French astronomer . He took part in an expedition to Australia which, under the direction of Nicolas Baudin , set sail on the ship Le Naturaliste on October 19, 1800 in Le Havre . Bernier died on this expedition.

According to him, Bernier Iceland in the Shark Bay in front of the Australian named West Coast.

Life

Pierre-François Bernier, who came from Montauban , was a student of Jérôme Lalandes . Before his last expedition, he took part in his first trip alongside Nicolas Baudin and had a portrait of Ingres made for him.

On board the expedition ship Le Naturaliste , Bernier made astronomical discoveries on the night of October 31st to November 1st, 1800; u. a. he could determine the distance from the star Aldebaran to the moon .

In June 1803 Bernier died near the coast of the island of Timor as a result of the dysentery .

In honor of Bernier, a small western Australian island was named which he had visited during one of his expeditions (see Bernier Island ). Cape Bernier on the southeast coast of Tasmania is also named after him . An area of ​​around 377 hectares is now protected as the Cape Bernier Nature Reserve .
