Pierre Joseph Louis Alfred Dubois (born November 21, 1852 in Sedan , † January 17, 1924 in Tours ) was a French Général de division .

Life

Dubois made his connection to the military school Saint-Cyr in 1874 and then came to the 24e régiment de dragons . Until 1884 he served in this and other dragoon regiments and then in the 4e régiment de chasseurs d'afrique , before he got a post in the staff of the 6e division de cavalerie in 1886 . By then he had completed both the Saumur cavalry school and the École supérieure de guerre . He finished the latter in 6th place out of 66 graduates. He had also served with the chasseurs d'afrique in Algeria and Tunisia and stood in the fight against insurgents. In 1889 he then moved to the 3e régiment de hussards , before he received a position as professor of applied tactics at the École supérieure de guerre in 1890 .

From 1897 he was squadron chief in the 21st and 13th régiment de chasseurs à cheval , then from 1901 commander of the Saumur cavalry school with the rank of colonel . In 1905 he became director of the cavalry in the War Ministry with the rank of Général de brigade . In May 1909 he was promoted to Général de division and command of the 1st division de cavalerie . At the same time he was a member of the technical committee of the cavalry.

From 1913 Dubois commanded the IX. Army corps based in Tours, as its commander he also went to the First World War . It fought in August 1914 in the border battles in the Ardennes and in September during the Battle of the Marne near the Saint-Gond Marshes and in the subsequent Battle of the Aisne . In October it was moved north to be used in the First Battle of Flanders . It remained in the Ypres arch until Dubois was replaced in March 1915 .

On March 13, 1915, Dubois took the lead in the 6th Army in the Compiègne area south of the Somme . Put up for discussion in February 1916, he was given a new assignment as commander of the 5th Military Region in Orléans in June . Transferred to the reserve in April 1917, he was reactivated again for a few months in the summer of 1917 and took over command of the 11th military region in Nantes . Here he prepared the arrival of American troops in the ports of Brest and Saint-Nazaire .

Dubois had been a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor since November 1914 . He was also holder of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and Commander of the Order of the Black Star , in addition to other domestic and foreign awards. He died in 1924 at the age of 71.
