Pierre-Joseph Redouté (born July 10, 1759 in Saint-Hubert in the Ardennes, the then Duchy of Luxembourg, † June 19, 1840 in Paris ) was an important French painter who is known for his watercolors of flowers .

Life

The watercolorist Redouté (" Raphael of the Flowers") is considered to be one of the founders of botanical flower painting. Redouté was one of five children of a decorative painter and interior decorator who worked for the Saint-Hubert Abbey. One of the local monks introduced the boy to the botany of wild plants and medicinal plants. At the age of thirteen, Redouté left his homeland and made his way as a portrait painter. He visited Amsterdam to study the work of Jan van Huysum , a famous flower painter.

In 1782 Redouté traveled to Paris to work with his brother Antoine-Ferdinand as a decorator and stage painter. He was able to pursue his botanical studies in the Jardin du Roi (today's Jardin des Plantes of the Natural History Museum). He also drew plants of his own accord and sold his pictures to a street vendor , who used them as a basis for making colored copperplate engravings . This soon attracted the attention of Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle and Gerard van Spaendonck (1746–1822), who from then on appeared as his sponsors.

Queen Marie Antoinette promoted Redouté, as did the Empress Joséphine later .

Honors

The plant genus Redutea Vent is named after Redouté . from the Mallow family (Malvaceae).

Works

Rosa 'Duchesse d'Orléans' ( Rosa gallica )

The most important and extensive works by Redouté are the table works on lilies and roses . The eight volumes of the Lilienwerk were published between 1802 and 1816. They contain a total of 603 illustrations and thus represent Redouté's most extensive work. Redouté's rose work consists of three volumes and was published between 1817 and 1824. With 170 plates, this work is much smaller than the lily volumes. His depictions of flowers are still used today, for example on coffee cups , tablecloths and umbrellas .
