Pierre Vincent Xambeu

Pierre Joseph Vincent Xambeu ( Catalan Pere Josep Vicenç Xambeu i Avillach , born on February 10, 1837 in Prades , Département Pyrénées-Orientales ; died there on June 9, 1917 ) was a French officer and entomologist who was particularly concerned with researching beetles and their larval stages .

Life

Pierre Vincent Xambeu was born in 1837 in the northern Catalan city of Prades as the son of Josep Xambeu and Elisabet Avillach. At the age of eighteen he enlisted in the French army, where he served until 1887, attaining the rank of captain .

As an entomologist, Xambeu mainly dealt with the metamorphosis of beetles. He also wrote a list of fauna in the area around his hometown of Ria and another for the insect fauna of the Pyrénées-Orientales department . There he discovered the scorpion Belisarius xambeui , which was described by Eugène Simon in 1879 and dedicated to Xambeu. Xambeu described several new species and was one of the most famous entomologists of his time. His extensive collection of longhorn beetles from all over the world was initially taken over into his own collection by the entomologist Maurice Pic and after his death came to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris.

Awards

Xambeu became a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1876 . For his Moeurs et métamorphoses des Insectes , published in numerous series from 1892 to 1915 , Xambeu was awarded the prestigious Prix ​​Jean Dollfus by the Société entomologique de France in 1899 .
