Pierre Du Jarric

Pierre Du Jarric (born March 2, 1566 in Toulouse , † 1617 in Saintes ) was a French Jesuit , philosopher , theologian and historian . He worked in Toulouse and Bordeaux .

Du Jarric entered the Society of Jesus on December 8, 1582 and taught philosophy and moral theology in Bordeaux for many years . Although he wanted to be a missionary, his wish was not granted. Instead, he devoted himself to writing on their behalf. The result was the Histoire des choses plus memorables advenues tant ez Indes orientales, que autres païs de la descouverte des Portugois ( History of the most memorable things that happened both in the East Indies and in other countries discovered by the Portuguese ), which appeared in three parts: The first appeared in 1608 , the second in 1610, and the third in 1614 .

Du Jarric's work provides a comprehensive overview of the missionary endeavors of the Jesuits up to 1610, mainly within the Portuguese sphere of interest. It contains a lot of valuable information on colonial history , geography and ethnography , taken from Spanish and Portuguese reports and from the works of Father Luis de Guzman ( Historia de las Missiones que han hecho los religiosos de la Compañia de Jesús ( History of the missions of the religious of the Society of Jesus ), Alcala 1601) and Father Ferdinand Guerreiro ( Relaçam Annal das Cousas que fizeram os Padres da Companhia de Jesus na India e Japão, Brazil, Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné ( Annalistic report of the activities of the Father of the Society of Jesus in India and Japan, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea )). By having the second part of King Louis XIII. dedicated, Du Jarric hoped to encourage the French king to mimic the Spanish and Portuguese colonization efforts . His work was reprinted frequently and was widely circulated, especially after it was translated into Latin by Martino Martinez III around 1615 . Du Jarric died in Saintes two years later .

The British historian Charles H. Payne provided a report on the Jesuit missions to the court of the Indian mogul Akbar I under the title Akbar and the Jesuits , in which he used Du Jarric's historical work and translated excerpts into English . In addition to the work of Vincent A. Smith , one of the most important portraits of this powerful ruler can be reconstructed from this compilation of Jesuit letters that have arrived from the east.

His French translation of The Paradise of the Soul by Albertus Magnus (Le Paradis de l'âme ou Traite des Vertus composé en latin par Albert le Grand) was published in Bordeaux in 1616.
