Pike is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Pike in Wyoming County in the US state of New York . At the time of the 2010 United States Census , the CDP had 371 pike residents. It is located roughly in the center of the town of the same name, southwest of the intersection of NY 19 and NY 39, and was organized as a village between 1848 and 2009 .

Pike's geographic coordinates are 42 ° 33 '  N , 78 ° 9'  W (42.556262, -78.155313).

According to the information from the United States Census Bureau , the former village had an area of ​​2.6 km 2 , of which 2.5 km 2 was land and 0.1 km 2 (= 1.01%) was water. This area was formed by a square with a side length of one mile , but not oriented in an east-west direction, but diagonally to the coordinate system, so that Dewitt Road, running from southwest to northeast, divided the village into two roughly equal halves.

Not far from Pike, the Bush Brook and Emery Brook flow into Wiscoy Creek .

history

In 1848 the village was incorporated. It is named after Zebulon Pike . In 2008 the residents signed a resolution that the village would be dissolved, and a referendum on March 18, 2008, in which 36 eligible voters voted, approved the dissolution on December 31, 2009 with 86 percent of the votes cast.

The First Free Will Baptist Church of Pike was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Pike inhabited 382 people. The population density was 150.5 people per km 2 . There were 141 housing units, an average of 55.6 per km 2 . The population in Pike was 96.34% White , 0% Black or African American , 2.09% Native American , 0.79% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0% said racial , and 0.79 % % named two or more races. 0.26% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Pikes were distributed to 128 households out of which 41.4% were living in children under 18 years of age. 60.2% of households were married, 6.3% had a female head of the household without a husband, and 28.1% were not families. 23.4% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 9.14% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.47.

The population was divided into 34.0% minors, 7.1% 18–24 year olds, 26.4% 25–44 year olds, 22.3% 45–64 year olds and 10.2% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 women there were 103.2 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 106.6 men.

The median household income in Pike was 39,000 US dollars and the median family income reached the height of 45,000 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 31,000 versus $ 21,111 for women. The per capita income was $ 13,840. 9.2% of the population and 3.6% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 5.3% of minors and 11.4% of those aged 65 and over.
