The zander catfish ( Pinirampus pirinampu ), engl. Flatwhiskered Catfish, belongs to the catfish species of tropical South America. It is called Barbado in Brazil and Bagre, Barba-Chata or Mota in Spanish-speaking countries.

Occurrence

The pikeperch catfish lives in large rivers such as the Amazon in Peru and Brazil , the Orinoco in Colombia and Venezuela , the Essequibo in Guayana to further south in the Rio Paraná in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina .

morphology

The catfish is characterized by its long antenna-like barbels, the body is mostly silvery-gray or brown in color and can have slightly dark spots. The fins are often lined with red.

Way of life

Under ideal living conditions, Pinirampus pirinampu can reach a length of 75 centimeters and a weight of up to 5 kilograms, making it one of the medium-sized catfish species in South America. In exceptional cases, it can also reach a length of 1.20 meters. A specimen weighing 11.40 kilograms is guaranteed, which was caught in the Paraguay River in 2007 . Sexual maturity is reached at a length of about 60 centimeters. The Barbado occurs in small schools and looks for small animals and fish near the ground. Although their prey range is relatively large, they prefer smaller catfish such as Iheringichthys labrosus and piranhas , which inhabit the same habitat. Their natural enemies include the Zungarowels , for example . Zander catfish occur in bodies of water with water temperatures of 24 to 29 ° C and a pH value of 5 to 9. They are migratory fish and migrate in schools during the dry season in the main stream of the rivers towards the upper reaches, where they spawn at the beginning of the rainy season. The hatched young fish can then be carried downstream with the current and colonize flood plains, where they hide from predators in aquatic plants. In a reservoir on the Paranapanema River in southern Brazil, it was found that the catfish visit certain sections of the water over the course of the year, depending on the clarity of the water, temperature and dissolved oxygen content.

Use

In the Brazilian states of Amazonas , Mato Grosso , Mato Grosso do Sul , Paraná and Roraima , pikeperch catfish play an important role as useful fish with very tasty meat. To prevent overfishing, the minimum was set at 60 centimeters. In the river system of the Rio Paraná such. B. the Jupiá reservoir and the Água Vermelha reservoir , the catfish are caught with longlines and cast nets. Anglers appreciate the catfish species because of its enduring strength.
