Theodor Pintner (born September 5, 1857 in Brno , † September 9, 1942 in Vienna ) was an Austrian zoologist.

Life

Pintner was the son of a cloth manufacturer and studied from 1875 to 1879 in particular zoology at the University of Vienna under Carl Claus . After interrupting his studies, he was assistant at the chair for geology and mineralogy at the TH Brno from 1885 to 1887 and, in 1887/88, a demonstrator at the zoological institute of the University of Graz under Ludwig Graff de Pancsova . After receiving his doctorate in 1888, he became Claus' assistant at the Zoological Institute of the University of Vienna. In 1894 he became a conservator, in 1897 a private lecturer, in 1901 an extraordinary titular professor, in 1905 an extraordinary professor and in 1913 a full professor at the University of Vienna. In 1911 he also became an honorary lecturer in zoology and parasitology at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna. Two years before his retirement in 1927 he was appointed acting head of the 1st Zoological Institute.

He dealt with the anatomy and histology of tapeworms and their taxonomy and discovered the eyelash bulb in the excretion system of tapeworms. In his work he closely followed the detailed anatomical description and hardly dealt with physiology or speculations about the phylogenesis of tapeworms.

He was a member of the Leopoldina and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (corresponding member since 1920, full member since 1937).
