Life

Piotr Potworowski studied art in Warsaw at the Konrad Krzyżanowski School and at the Cracow Art Academy under Józef Pankiewicz . He traveled to Russia from 1915 to 1918 . He lived from 1924 to 1933 in France and was in Paris to artist group of the so-called Paris Committee ( " Kapisten "). The capists gathered in France at the Paris branch of the Krakow Academy, which was founded after Poland regained independence and which has made a decisive contribution to the development and dissemination of Polish art abroad.

Potvorovsky began painting in 1926. From 1939 he lived in Sweden , he returned to France. He fled to Great Britain before the occupation of the rest of Europe by the German Wehrmacht in World War II .

In England he developed his own artistic style. He preferred to paint landscapes, of which only the colors could be found, often only as spots of color on his abstract paintings. In Great Britain his art was very important.

" His work is entirely free from pretentious humbug. It is in an idiom entirely of our own day, but reveals an exquisite taste and the most delicate sensitivity qualities which are, perhaps, rather less characteristic of the present day. "

- David Waring, Poetry in Paint in: Art News and Review , London 1952

From 1949 he was a professor at the Bath Academy of Arts . In 1958 he returned to Poland and from then on lived in Poznan . After his return to Poland he taught at the art academies in Gdansk and Poznan. In 1959 he was a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel . In 1960 he represented Poland at the Venice Biennale , where he was awarded the Biennale Prize .
