Piqd [ pɪkt ] (derived from “hand-picked”) is a news aggregator in German and English based in Munich .

On the platform it is not algorithms but journalistic curators who recommend content from publications available online. They write short accompanying texts in which they make the specificity and relevance of the recommendation clear. Thus, piqd is supposed to be an alternative to the distribution of media content in social networks, which is primarily aimed at reach , and offers "space for a more relaxed debate".

overview

In 2015 piqd was founded by philanthropist Konrad Schwingenstein, the grandson of August Schwingenstein . In Germany, the piqd.de portal went online on November 19, 2015. The positive response and rapid growth of the German platform was followed by the development of an English-speaking offshoot. This was published on February 22, 2017 under the domain piqd.com.

In the same year piqd was nominated for the Grimme Online Award in the special category.

The curators on piqd are assigned to certain socially relevant topic channels and can only recommend content there. There are 18 such channels on piqd.de, and only 7 in the English version. This is also reflected in the number of active curators: around 150 curators write for the German platform, on piqd.com there are around 50.

organization

The managing director is the journalist and independent project manager Marcus von Jordan, who in the same position is also responsible for the business of the August Schwingenstein Foundation and the online portfolio network for journalists torial . Frederik Fischer heads the editorial team. The trained journalist previously worked for various German-language media such as Zeit Online , BR and ZDF for over 10 years . He is the founder of the Twitter context search engine tame.it and co-editor of Vocer .

Curators

The curators, also known as "piqer", have the greatest possible editorial freedom. You work freely for piqd and recommend one piece of content per week on average. In principle, they receive a fee for this. Among them are scientists, journalists, authors, politicians and experts from other areas as well as some editorial offices of young media projects and startups (e.g. The Buzzard, Reportagen.fm, FEATVRE, blendle). The curators include the following well-known people:

Formats

All recommendations are published on the respective websites of piqd.de and piqd.com. The most important format, however, is the automatically generated Daily Digest, the daily newsletter. Every registered user receives the recommendations from the subscribed channels.

In addition, piqd produces two German-language podcasts : piqd thema with Katrin Rönicke and piqd background in cooperation with detektor.fm . As part of the podcasts, piqd has been organizing public events under the name "piqd Salon" since the beginning of 2018.

On piqd.de you can find recommendations from German-speaking countries as well as recommendations from English-speaking sources. On piqd.com, both texts and recommendations are in English.

Topic channels

In 2015 piqd.de started with 13 topic channels, meanwhile there are 18. Particularly topical reports are recommended within the channel "Seite Eins". In addition, there are mainly thematically related channels: a "Europe" channel, the business channel "People and Economy", "Climate and Change" as well as time and history. Recommendations on health and interpersonal issues are published in "Head and Body" and in "Love, Sex and Us". Readers will find socio-political content in "Technologie und Gesellschaft", "Feminisms" and "Zukunft und Arbeit". "Pop und Kultur" serves as a contact point for cultural contributions. There are also format-dependent channels such as "Videos and Podcasts" and "Reports and Interviews". Originally there were also two city channels, one for Munich and one for Hamburg, but these were temporarily closed on October 1, 2016.

The blog channel Literatenfunk is a special feature, on which authors and bloggers write their own longer texts that are linked to literary works. In 2017 the channel was nominated for the book blog award .

According to its own report, the recommended content comes from over 2,400 different sources. Despite the self-imposed goal of breaking the filter bubble of modern online media, a more left-liberal political orientation can be seen in some channels.

financing

piqd is a GmbH and is financed by members, an investor and sponsoring. So far the website has been free of advertising. All recommendations can be read for free. A free registration on the platform and for the newsletter is possible. The payment service is voluntary and can be taken out monthly, annually and for life. Paying users are referred to as "piqd members".
