Pius Ferdinand Messerschmitt (born May 30, 1858 in Bamberg , † October 29, 1915 in Munich ) was a German painter . He is considered one of the most important Franconian painters of the 19th century.

Life

Pius Ferdinand Messerschmitt came from an old Bamberg ranks and merchant family. He received his first lessons while still at school from Julius Kiesenwetter, a painter at the Schmidt Porcelain Painting Institute in Bamberg. After graduating from the royal trade school in Bamberg, he worked as a businessman in his father's wholesaler for grain and regional products. His apprenticeship was marked by several stays abroad: 1874 in Neuchâtel NE, 1875/76 in Antwerp, 1876 in Strasbourg. In 1878 he visited the Paris World Exhibition . In addition to his business activities, he continued to work as an artist. The first illustrations in magazines such as “ Über Land und Meer ” appeared as early as 1878.

On April 1, 1880, he moved into the Munich Academy, the forerunner of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts . He first learned from Gabriel von Hackl and Gyula Benczúr . In May 1882 he switched to Professor Wilhelm Lindenschmit the Younger's class .

In 1894 he married Else Amalie Fellerer, daughter of the Bavarian Court Councilor and general practitioner Dr. Fellerer, Munich. In the same year he was able to move into a studio at Hildegardstrasse 13 in Munich.

Messerschmitt was a member of numerous artists 'associations: initially in the Ostade Club, in the Munich Artists' Cooperative, from 1887/88 in the Munich Art Association. Around 1896 he joined the Luitpold Group . After the turn of the century, he moved to the split-off Bavarian Artists' Association. In 1914 he was secretary of the General German Artists Group.

His widow Elsie married the painter and academy professor Carl von Marr in 1916 .

Pius Ferdinand Messerschmitt died in Munich in 1915. In the Solln district of Munich , where he had his last residence, he is buried in the Solln cemetery in the same grave as Carl von Marr .

Awards

Messerschmitt was a successful and valued painter in his day. He received the gold medal of the Munich Academy for his monumental history painting Wallenstein's camp (1878/88, location unknown). At the turn of the year 1887/88 he won the second prize in the Munich Academy's Christmas competition for his painting Die Heilige Elisabeth (Bamberg, Historical Museum). In 1905 he was awarded the Silver State Medal for his painting Poststation at the Salzburg Art Exhibition. In 1912 he was appointed professor at the Munich Academy.
