Countries with production of platinum metals (2008)

Here are tables and graphs with information on platinum group metals represented.

overview

In 2018, the global production of platinum was 190 tons (2017: 199 tons). The most important extraction nations were South Africa (137 tons), Russia (22 tons) and Zimbabwe (15 tons), whose share of world extraction was over 90 percent.

The global production of palladium amounted to 220 tons in 2018 (2017: 225 tons). The largest producers were Russia (90 tonnes), South Africa (81 tonnes) and Canada (20 tonnes), which together accounted for 87 percent of the global volume.

The eligible reserves of platinum metals were estimated by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in January 2020 at 69,000 tons worldwide, 63,000 tons of which are in South Africa alone. The largest reserves are in the local Bushveld Complex , one of the largest intrusive complexes of alkaline melts on earth. The high concentration of deposits of rare metals such as platinum is of global political importance. The static range of the reserves is over 160 years.

Platinum mines only exist in South Africa ( Transvaal ). Platinum sources are also the non-ferrous metal production of copper and nickel in z. B. Greater Sudbury ( Ontario ) and Norilsk (Russia). Platinum Group Metals (PGM) are produced there as a by-product of nickel refining. Six metals are referred to as platinum metals, the chemical behavior of which is so similar to platinum that the separation and purification originally caused great difficulties: platinum, palladium, iridium , osmium , rhodium and ruthenium . The platinum metals belong to the noble metals and have a corrosion resistance similar to gold .

Reserves

The United States Geological Survey distinguishes between the following two categories:

  • The reserve base is that portion of an identified resource that meets the specific minimum physical and chemical criteria for current mining and production practices, including grade , quality , thickness and depth . The publication of data on the stock base was stopped by the USGS in 2009.
  • The reserves are that part of the supply base that could be economically extracted or produced at a given time. The term does not have to mean that extraction systems are installed and working. Reserves only contain exploitable substances.

The reserves of the countries with the greatest production are listed here.
