The Plattenspitze is a 3422  m high mountain in the South Tyrolean part of the Ortler Alps .

Location and surroundings

The peak of the plateau rises in the ridge that separates the inner Suldental in the west from the inner Martell valley in the east and the small side valleys Rosimtal and Pedertal. Of the once extensive glacier areas around the summit, the north-facing Rosimferner and in the south-west the small Plattenferner have been preserved. Adjacent peaks are in the further course of the ridge in the north - separated by the Schildjoch - the Schildspitze ( 3461  m ) and in the south - separated by the Pederjoch - the Inner Pederspitze ( 3309  m ). The municipal boundaries of Laas , Martell and Stilfs meet on the summit of the Plattenspitze, which is part of the Stilfserjoch National Park along with the area .

Alpinism

The first known ascent of the Plattenspitze took place on July 20, 1867, when Heinrich Waitzenbauer from Munich, led by Johann Pinggera, reached the summit. An ascent from Sulden or Martell does not require contact with the glacier and is typically carried out as a ridge crossing from the Hinteren Schöntaufspitze in the south to the Rosimjoch in the north. In winter, the summit is a popular destination for ski tourers .
