Platythelys is a genus from the family of the orchid (Orchidaceae). It consists of 13 types of herbaceous plants that are native to tropical and subtropical America. According to R. Govaerts, all species are included in the genus Aspidogyne .

description

The species of the genus Platythelys form a creeping rhizome , the hairy roots arise at the nodes . On the rising rungs, the leaves are spaced apart, the internodes are not compressed. The leaves are lanceolate to oval in shape, clearly stalked, the leaf base includes the shoot. The leaf blade is uniformly green or green with silver spots. In some mykoheterotrophic species, the leaves are reduced to small scales.

The terminal, racemose inflorescence has few or many flowers . The inflorescence axis can be hairy and is covered by some bracts . The bracts are about as long as ovary and the short flower stalk together. The flowers are resupinated , the petals are free. The three sepals are roughly the same shape and size, hairy on the outside. The lateral petals are inverted lanceolate, they lie close to the upper petal and form a tube or hood. The lip is divided into a bowl-shaped lower part (hypochil) and a three-lobed, spread out front part (epichil). The column is short, widened towards the front to form a wedge. The pollinia are each connected by a short stalk with a small adhesive disk (Viscidium). The scar consists of two surfaces that sit close together. The separating tissue between the stigma and the stamen (rostellum) is only flat. The capsule fruit is oval to almost cylindrical.

Occurrence

Platythelys is common in tropical and subtropical America. From the south of the USA via Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, the distribution area stretches through the northern half of South America to Argentina and Paraguay. The distribution extends up to altitudes of 1200 meters. The locations are mostly in the shade of moist forests, rarely in moist grassland.

Systematics and botanical history

Flowers of Platythelys paranaensis

Platythelys is classified within the tribe Cranichideae in the subtribe Goodyerinae . According to Dressler, this can be further divided into two groups; Platythelys stands together with the majority of the genera that do not have two clearly separated scar surfaces.

The genus Platythelys was established in 1977 by Leslie Garay . As a type species he chose the up to then as erythrodes querceticola called querceticola platythelys . The name Platythelys is made up of the Greek words πλαθύς platys , "flat", and θῆλυς thelys , "female"; it refers to the flat rostellum.

The following species were counted among platythelys :
