The Plenge is a 2373 meter high mountain in the Carnic Alps in Carinthia . It is considered the local mountain of the Lesach Valley , its summit is on the border with Kötschach-Mauthen .
Location and surroundings
The Plenge is around four kilometers south of Birnbaum , one of the four main towns in the Lesach Valley. It forms the northernmost peak of the Mooskofel group, which is a little in front of the Carnic main ridge. As a result, it occupies a dominant position in the Lesach Valley, although many mountains of the Carnic main ridge are significantly higher. The mighty mountain range towers over the small town of Wodmaier ( 993 m ) on the south side of the Lesach Valley and can be seen from large parts of the valley. This is one of the reasons why it is considered a local mountain for many Lesachtal people. From the summit of the Plenge you can see the entire Lesachtal, but also the Gailtal in the east. With appropriate visibility, many prominent peaks of the main Alpine ridge (including the Großglockner , Großvenediger , Hochalmspitze ) can be made out in the north . To the south, there are good views of the Hohe Warte , only five kilometers away , the highest peak in the Carnic Alps.
etymology
The mountain was named Blenger in 1785 . Heinz-Dieter Pohl connects Plenge with the Swiss-German alpine word plangge , "steep pasture, steeply sloping grassy areas in forests or between rocks", originally "board", from Romanesque planca . The way to the summit actually leads over steep grass slopes from both the Raimundealm in the south and from the Plengboden in the northeast.
Route to the summit
The plenge is easy for experienced mountaineers to do, but the tour requires a head for heights and surefootedness. A consistently steep but well-marked path starts in the forest above Wodmaier and takes about 4 hours to the summit. At around 2200 m , a small lake offers a good resting place. The last part on the summit construction runs over the south ridge and requires easy climbing ( UIAA I + ). The summit cross is located a little below the highest point. Due to the long and arduous ascent, the plenge is not climbed very often. There are no places to stop for a break, shelters or shelters.
