Pleyel Concert (also published as Paris Concert and Pleyel Concerts 1954 ) is a jazz album by Gerry Mulligan , recorded at five concerts in Paris' Salle Pleyel from June 1 to 7, 1954 as part of the Troisième Salon du Jazz . The concert recordings were initially published excerpts on Disques Vogue and Pacific Records . In 1993, two CDs, Volume 1 and Volume 2, appeared in full in the Vogue series American Jazz in Paris .

The album

His piano- less quartet was the first regular formation in modern jazz without a chordal instrument such as piano or guitar . After first records with the trumpeter Chet Baker in 1952 and a stay in prison (for drug possession), the baritone saxophonist had reorganized his band; he now played with valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer instead of Baker . His titles "Walkin 'Shoes" or "Line for Lyons" were great successes during this time.

In the summer of 1954 the Gerry Mulligan Quartet performed in Paris for several days: Henri Renaud had invited him to the Festival Le Troisieme Salon du Jazz when he played at the Blue Note in Philadelphia in the winter of 1953/54 . The event took place from June 1 to 7, 1954; the Gerry Mulligan Quartet played a total of five times in the Salle Pleyel . The quartet had an extremely grueling journey to Europe behind them; the band leader had to be carried out of the plane on a stretcher and given medical care. However, the quartet had the opportunity to play a concert in Switzerland beforehand.

In addition to the Mulligan Quartet, Thelonious Monk , Martial Solal , Don Byas , Michel de Villers , Mary Lou Williams and the orchestras of Jack Diéval , Henri Renaud and Kurt Edelhagen also performed . Four of the Mulligan appearances were recorded by Disques Vogues .

Rating of the album

Sometimes the titles are repeated; however, Mulligan played - according to Richard Cook and Brian Morton in the second edition of the Penguin Guide to Jazz - so subtly that you can hear the various solos over and over again. They played the swing classic Makin 'Whoopee with particular relish , as did Jimmy GiuffresFour Brothers ”. Cook and Morton give the album the second highest rating. The jazz critic Charles Delaunay wrote at the time: "In contrast to many modern musicians who perform with bored pose, which pleasantly surprises the audience at the pleasure the four musicians had while playing". Delaunay also highlights the seldom good communication between the band and the audience. The critic P. Steder wrote in the specialist magazine STEREO on the occasion of the new edition in 1993: "The surprising interplay, depth and wit of the solos as well as the immensely swinging rhythm section make this recording the highlight of Mulligan's record career."
