Pnina Tamano-Schata ( Hebrew פנינה תמנו-שטה; * 1981 in Wuzaba , Amhara , Ethiopia ) is an Israeli politician ( Jesch Atid , Kachol Lavan ). She has been a member of the Knesset since 2013 . Tamano-Shata was the first Ethiopian Jew to be elected to the Israeli parliament. In May 2020 she became Minister for Immigration and Integration .

Life

Origin, education, profession

Tamano-Schata came to Israel with her father and four siblings from Ethiopia as part of Operation Moses 1984. Her mother and two other sisters were then found in Ethiopia by the Jewish Agency for Israel and also brought to Israel. Her date of birth according to the passport is November 1, 1981, which was chosen at random due to the inadequate registry office documents. She spent the first few years in a reception center and then in Petach Tikwa . Her grandfather is Kais Shato, a spiritual leader of the Ethiopian Jews. She speaks Amharic , English and Hebrew.

She completed her service with the Israeli armed forces as a non-commissioned officer . Tamano-Schata received various scholarships and studied law at the Ono Academic College in Kirjat Ono near Tel Aviv. Among other things, she received funding from the “Sparks of Science” program at the Weizmann Institute for Science . She became vice-chairwoman of the Israeli-Ethiopian student union. She worked as a legal advisor for an investment bank and, as the official representative of Israel, oversaw foreign delegations. From 2007–2012 she worked as a court reporter for Israeli Channel 1 . She is responsible for the promotion of Ethiopian academics at the “Olim Beyachad” foundation.

Tamano-Schata is married and has two children.

Political career

Tamano-Schata had offers from various parties, but felt more like a fig leaf roll there. She could identify with Yesch Atid's approaches, even if her rather conservative family was initially very skeptical about her involvement with this progressive party.

In the parliamentary elections on January 22, 2013, Tamano-Schata came 14th on her party's list and was elected to the Knesset. She is the first Ethiopian Jew there, but with Schlomo Mallo and Adisu Massala two men belonging to this group belonged to the Knesset. Tamano-Schata primarily focuses on social policy, the housing and school situation of the Jews from East Africa is still problematic. There are also strong prejudices against this population group. Fighting discrimination by schools and authorities and helping to solve problems with the Chief Councilor , which is responsible for civil issues, are among her fields of work. Shortly after her election, she took over the chairmanship of a Knesset commission to investigate allegations that isolated Ethiopian-Israeli women had been treated with three-month injections and long-term contraceptives by the authorities without their knowledge or adequate information .

For the parliamentary elections in April 2019 , Yesch Atid joined forces with Benny Gantz 'new party Chosen LeJisra'el to form the Kachol Lavan (“blue-white”) alliance. Tamano-Schata was re-elected as a member of parliament and has been a member of the “Blue-White” parliamentary group ever since. After the parliamentary elections in April 2020 , the alliance split: while Benny Gantz, as the leader of Kachol Lavan, agreed a grand coalition with the right-wing Likud of Benjamin Netanyahu , Yesch Atid rejected this coalition and went into the opposition. However, Pnina Tamano-Schata supported the government agreement and remained in the “Blue-White” faction. Since May 17, 2020, she has been Minister for Immigration and Integration in the Benjamin Netanyahu V cabinet .
