Pojazdy Szynowe Pesa Bydgoszcz SA ( Pesa ; German  Rail Vehicles Bromberg AG ) is a company from the Polish city of Bydgoszcz that specializes in the construction of rail vehicles.

history

On July 27, 1851, a repair shop for the Prussian Eastern Railway was opened in the then Prussian, later German city of Bromberg . It originally comprised a locomotive depot and a forge. An administration building was built in 1855 and a repair building for steam locomotives and wagons in 1856. At the beginning of the 20th century, up to four locomotives and ten wagons were completed every day. With 1,370 employees and 70 apprentices, it was the largest employer in the city in 1907. When the city fell to Poland after the end of the First World War , the company began to restore trains for the Polish State Railways from 1920 , it was called PKP Warsztaty Głowne I kl. (Main workshop of class 1). From 1939 to 1945 it functioned as the state railway repair shop in Bromberg . The plant survived the Second World War without major damage or destruction. In 1950, like all repair shops, it was called ZNTK. Up to 5200 people were employed there in the 1950s. In 1982 it was finally incorporated into the Polish State Railways.

After the end of communism in Poland , the company was spun off from the Polish State Railways in 1991. In 1995 the factory was taken over by the then management. Initially only multiple units were repaired, but soon other tasks such as double-decker cars and sleeping and couchette cars were added. In 2001 it was transferred to a holding company; the privatization was accompanied by the change of name to Pojazdy Szynowe Pesa Bydgoszcz Spółka Akcyjna Holding . The focus was now on the construction of new vehicles.

The vehicle manufacturer's current premises are in the immediate vicinity of the Bydgoszcz Główna train station, the city’s main train station.

Since August 2008 the ZNTK "Mińsk Mazowiecki" has been part of the Pesa Bydgoszcz group.

The company ran into financial difficulties due to compensation payments due to delivery delays, a collapse in orders in 2016 and 2017, and the deterioration in the ruble exchange rate. On November 7, 2017, a loan agreement for 200 million zloty was signed with a bank consortium ( PKO Bank Polski as the lead manager) , the prerequisite for which is the entry of a new investor. Pesa agreed the details of an almost complete takeover with the Polish State Development Fund , which should be finalized in mid-June 2018. In fact, the last contract was signed on July 17th. 300 million zlotys are to be invested in the company.

vehicles

With the 214 M, the first self-developed diesel multiple unit was presented in 2001. The first electric multiple unit followed in 2004 (PKP series EN 59). The construction of tram cars has also started.

Among the rail vehicles that are built by Pesa, include railcars of series ED59 , ED74 , ED95 , ED161 , SA103 , SA106 , SA131 , SA132 , SA133 and link and the tram -Gelenktriebwagen-series Tramicus, Swing and Jazz . Pesa also builds railcars for the Italian regional railways Ferrovie del Sud Est , Ferrovie Nord Milano and the Lithuanian Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai . In 2012, Deutsche Bahn signed a contract with Pesa for the delivery of up to 470 Link diesel multiple units.

The contract with the Bavarian Regentalbahn AG , whose vehicles were supposed to go into operation in December 2014, was terminated by the Regentalbahn in March 2015 because the vehicles in Germany had not been approved and there were apparently serious problems obtaining them.

In 2012, the Gama, the first electric locomotive , was presented.

In June 2016, the Pesa Link was approved in Germany and will be used by Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn from July 2016 . It is the first railway vehicle in the history of Polish industry to be approved for operation in Germany. In addition to the Austrian integral diesel multiple unit from 1998, it is the second diesel multiple unit that has been built outside of Germany and is registered in Germany.

employment

After the Second World War, Pesa Bydgoszcz saw a sharp increase in employment. This trend stopped in 1955 with 5229 employees. From this point in time and after an interim phase of increase (1962–1970), the number of employees gradually decreased until 2000 (997 employees). An increase has been observed again since 2001.
