The Police of Lithuania is an institution of justice in Lithuania . The task of the police is to maintain internal security , to ward off dangers to public security and, in some cases, to public order ( crime prevention ). The police also research criminal and regulatory acts ( repression ). The Police Department at the Ministry of Interior of Lithuania is the central authority of the police in Lithuania.

history

The Milicija ( militia ) existed until 1924 and from 1940 to 1990 . In 1924 the Milicija became the Policija . On May 14, 1920 the Militia Act ( Milicijos įstatymas ) and 1935 other legal acts ( Valstybinio saugumo departamento statutas , Policijos aplinkraščių Sąvadas and Instrukcija policijos tarnautojams ) were passed. Until 1933 the public police were subordinate to the municipalities and the Ministry of Interior of Lithuania . From 1933 the Lithuanian Criminal Police and the State Security Police were handed over to the Valstybės saugumo departamentas (VSD). 1936 was water police of Lithuania at the Ministry of Transport of Lithuania built. In 1990 the Police Academy of Lithuania was established and in 2001 the Center for Criminal Investigations of the Lithuanian Police in Vilnius .
