The Trace of the 13th Apostle is a German crime film by Jörg Wilbrandt from 1983. The television film was released as the 83rd episode in the film series Polizeiruf 110 .

action

Within three months, six different village churches in the Berlin area were broken into. Valuable church vessels are stolen. During the last break-in, the thief tried to steal a valuable apostle figure, but was surprised by Pastor Steinhäuser. Steinhäuser tries to overwhelm the burglar and is knocked down. The organist finds the seriously injured pastor who is taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Captain Peter Fuchs and Lieutenant Vera Arndt take over the investigation, assisted by Sub-Lieutenant Harry Bär, who has just left the academy.

Restorer Hubert Arlot once restored the figure of the apostle and there is also an almost perfect copy of the figure in his living room. He explains to the investigators that the apostle figure of Nathanael is so valuable because it was made by a student of Tilman Riemenschneider . In addition, it is a special feature as a representation of the 13th apostle. When describing the figure, Hubert notices that the original is not in the church. Irritated, he says goodbye to the investigators and leaves. In his living room he finds the original that his son Steffen is about to pack. He claims to have found a buyer for the copy. Hubert confronts him and Steffen soon admits to having swapped both characters. He had to knock down Pastor Steinhäuser, even if he was Hubert's friend. Hubert covers Steffen - not only because he is his son, but also because Steffen's wife Silke is four months pregnant.

The attempt to reverse the exchange of figures fails because the church is being monitored by the police and the copy in the church has been equipped with a transmitter. Since the alarm went off as a result of Hubert's attempt to swap the figures, the figure is subjected to closer inspection in the church. The investigators realize that it is a copy. Hubert is taken into custody and confesses to the robbery of the figure and the further break-ins. However, Steinhäuser, who briefly woke up from fainting, says that Hubert was not the culprit. As the organist was able to give a description of the escape vehicle, Harry Bär soon comes across Steffen, whose company vehicle matches the description of the escape vehicle. Steffen has a secret relationship with the Berlin photographer Monika Franz, who made contact with the art collector Barbara Grölling from Munich . Steffen was supposed to steal the figure and receive 4,000 marks for it, which among other things should help him as a money-hungry man to fulfill his dream of having his own car. Although Steffen now wants to reverse the action because of the police and his father's knowledge, Monika insists on selling the figure, as she has already received a deposit from Barbara Grölling. Monika takes the figure from the Arlot family home.

Hubert learns from the investigators that Steinhäuser died of his injuries. Now he admits he wasn't the thief. He says that the original figure is in his living room, but Monika has already fetched it. Steffen arrives and pretends to be innocent, but is accused by the father. When he learns that Steinhäuser is dead, he explains that Monika has the figure and will probably take it to Berlin. The investigators manage to find Monika when the figure is handed over to Barbara Grölling. In the end it turns out that although Steffen stole the 13th apostle, the remaining break-ins were carried out by Monika, who photographed the stolen goods - the investigators found the negatives in their photo laboratory.

production

The trace of the 13th apostle was filmed from September 1 to October 30, 1981 under the working title The trace of the black apostle in Potsdam , Teupitz , Lindenberg and Berlin and the surrounding area. The costumes of the film created Karin Pas , the Filmbauten derived from Britta Bastian . The film premiered on March 6, 1983 in the first program of GDR television. The audience participation was 47.3 percent.

It was the 83rd episode in the film series Polizeiruf 110 . Captain Peter Fuchs investigated in his 51st case and Lieutenant Vera Arndt in her 46th case. The director of the film was Jörg Wilbrandt, his father Jürgen Wilbrandt composed the film music. Documentary film director Roland Steiner can be seen in a supporting role as organist.

The criticism found that director Wilbrandt told the story "leisurely, without much action, but in beautiful atmospheric pictures". Art theft had already been discussed too much in the police call series in 1973 in A Madonna .
