Ponta Garça is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Vila Franca do Campo . It is located on the Portuguese Atlantic island of São Miguel , which belongs to the Azores . 3547 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011) live in the municipality on an area of 29.4 km², which corresponds to a population density of 120.8 inhabitants / km².
The parents of the internationally known pop singer Nelly Furtado (* 1978) come from Ponta Garça. You emigrated to Canada in 1967 before the Salazar dictatorship.
history
The island was settled from 1436 . Ponta Garça already existed in 1480 . The community became independent in the course of the 16th century.
Attractions
The listed lighthouse Farol da Ponta da Garça was put into service in 1957 .
The three-aisled parish church Igreja Paroquial de Ponta Garça is also a listed building. The Mannerist church, also known as Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade ( Portuguese for: Church of Our Lady of Mercy) after its patron saint , was expanded and rebuilt several times after its original construction in 1530.
The manor house Solar Visconde Botelho dates back to the 15th century and received a characteristic castle tower in the 1940s.
The pilgrimage chapel Ermida da Senhora das Mercês from the 18th century and various stone fountains can also be seen in the community.
