Pornophonique is a duo from Darmstadt , whose musical trademark is the combination of electronic 8-bit chiptune music from Game Boy or Commodore 64 with vocals and guitar accompaniment . The band has released their music under a Creative Commons license and has connections to comics as well as various computer scenes.

history

The two band members met at a comic book dealer. Kai Richter already had musical ambitions, he had been active in heavy metal bands for a long time and was looking for a new, quieter music project. While looking for a colleague for his new idea, he met Felix Heuser, who was able to play music on the Game Boy. They decided to start a joint project called "Pornophonique". Since they couldn't find a label, they made their music available online for free.

In order to play live with the Game Boy Music, Pornophonique uses the plug-in module LSDJ (Little Sound DJ). It is a non-official program for the Game Boy that turns the game console into a musical instrument. A demo version can be downloaded as an image .

reception

Pornophonique is very well known in the comic scene. The comic artist Joscha Sauer designed the cover for the single "Lemmings in Love". The comic artist Flix referenced the duo in a comic. Other cover work comes from the illustrators Sascha Thau , Mawil and Naomi Fearn , among others . By spreading their music through jamendo and last.fm , the band reached a great number of recipients outside of the comic scene. Jamendo recorded over 150,000 streams and 20,000 downloads (as of September 23, 2008) and at last.fm they were "scrobbled" over 500,000 times by over 30,000 listeners worldwide.

Works

On September 1st, 2007 her album called 8-bit lagerfeuer was released. It contains eight songs: sad robot , take me to the bonuslevel because i need an extralife , lemmings in love , space invaders , i want to be a machine , 1/2 player game , game over and rock'n'roll hall of fame . The songs mostly deal with topics from the field of computer games and information technology; Among other things, they are about sad robots and the loneliness in a dungeon of a computer role-playing game. Each song has its own cover artwork, all of which were drawn by well-known comic authors. The CD is delivered in record look. Because of the themes, Pornophonique has gained great popularity among computer-savvy groups; Among other things, there were also appearances at the MetaRheinMain Chaos Days and at the Open Hack Day London . According to the official Twitter account, a new album will be released in February 2020.

Appearances

Pornophonique has been performing regularly since 2003, especially in clubs. In October 2008 she played at the Open Music Contest at the University of Marburg , under the patronage of Professor Lawrence Lessig , and in 2009 at the Free! Music! Party des Musikpiraten eV By the end of 2009 the band played well over 100 concerts, mainly in Germany , but also other live concerts in the Netherlands , Switzerland , Austria , Italy , Portugal and Great Britain .
