history

The place with its castle was first mentioned in 1208 and belonged to the properties of the Republic of Siena. After that, the place belonged to the Senese families Piccolomini and Tolomei. In 1377 Porrona was almost completely destroyed by the Brettoni and Guasconi militias. In 1438 the place belonged again to Siena and was again divided between the Piccolomini and the Tolomei. The Tolomei gave their part of the place (Porrona di Sopra) under Jacopo di Stefano di Tolomei in 1458 to the Augustinian monks of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Siena. The lower part (Porrona di Sotto) remained with the Piccolomini.
