Porus is a small town in the south of Jamaica . The city is located in County Middlesex and is the third largest city in the Manchester Parish . In 2012, Porus had a population of 6,096 people.
etymology
Originally Porus was founded with the name "Vale Lionel" ( German Lionel Valley ) after the governor of Jamaica at the time , Sir Lionel Smith . Shortly thereafter, however, the place received its current name Porus, which can probably be derived from the porous soil.
geography
Porus is on the edge of a lowland plain in the Don Figueroa Mountains . While the mountains around the plain rise up to 600 meters above sea level, the height in the place and in the vicinity is an average of 135 meters. At the northern edge of Porus the mountains rise again and reach a height of up to 950 meters.
The closest villages are the direct neighboring village of Melrose Hill in the west and Witfield Hill, which is about three kilometers northeast .
history
Porus was founded in 1840 by the missionary James Phillippo as a free village for former slaves. It was the sixth village of its kind that was built by Philippo. In the early years Porus was a very small village, although it was famous for its coffee market. Today the majority of the population consists of simple farmers and artisans.
From 1895 to 1992 Porus was connected to the public rail network. The Porus Railway Station was the stop on the Kingston - Montego Bay line .
Culture and environment

The lush vegetation is a hallmark of the Porus region. The place is particularly known for the cultivation of taro and its many different types of fruit. Above all Akee , bananas and allspice .
A tributary of the Rio Minho runs parallel to the main street , which cools the atmosphere in the city. The area south of the city is interspersed with wetlands.
Churches
There are various Christian communities in Porus. The Presbyterians and the Anglican Communion show the greatest presence . There are also congregations of the New Testament Church of God , Methodists , Baptists , Mennonites and the Apostolic Church .
Infrastructure
The A2 , which connects the southeastern city of Spanish Town with Savanna-la-Mar on the southwest coast, runs through Porus .
