Powder was an American rock band from Los Angeles , best known for their debut success Up Here .

Band history

The band front woman Ninette Terhart is originally from Toronto . She has a classical vocal training, but then turned to pop music. She was a background singer when she met guitarist Phil Xenidis aka Phil X on a tour. He worked as a studio musician with Rob Zombie , Alice Cooper and Mayhem and was in various bands and until 1993 a member of the Canadian band Triumph . Both got along not only musically and wrote music together, after leaving the band the two married on July 23, 1994. Terhart pursued her singing career further and a few years later had a hit in the Canadian dance charts with her single All of My Dreams , for which she was nominated for a Juno Award in 1998 .

Then they went to Los Angeles , where they worked with Kenneth Edmonds on the film project Josie and the Pussycats . At the beginning of 2000 Terhart and Xenidis founded the band Powder together with J-Bo Dynamite as drummer and Allan Hearn as bassist and in March of that year they had their first appearance. At first they were only known in California and stood out primarily for their live theatrical shows and the singer's sex appeal. Then there were the imaginative and escapist lyrics that contributed to the entertaining performances. In their first year, they were named Best Rock / Pop Artist and Best Live Show at the LA Music Awards.

The band self-published their first album Sonic Machine in 2002 on Powder Records . Then they signed a contract with Continental Entertainment and released the single Up Here . The video was already conspicuous in itself and received additional attention on the music broadcaster MTV through the participation of Jason Mewes and Ahmet Zappa . The second band album, Powder , was released in May 2004. Despite the newfound fame, it was not a chart success.

Over time, their shows became more and more sophisticated and lavish. This not only applied to Terhart's cartoon-style costumes , acrobatics and pole dance numbers were incorporated into the performances and real artists were hired for them. The core of the band remained Terhart and Xenidis, while the other musicians changed. In 2008 they finished a third album called Nothing . It reappeared on their own label, which they founded in 2005 and called Goldielocks & Xman Productions . Once again, there was no commercial success and a little later the relationship broke up. In 2010, Terhart and Xenidis divorced and thus also sealed the end of powder .

After the split, Phil X formed a new band with Powder members Brian Burwell and Daniel Spree called The Drills , with whom he also released albums. In 2011 he jumped in for Richie Sambora at Bon Jovi for the first time and then became a live musician and finally a permanent member. Ninette Terhart became part of the acrobatic duo Silk Sisters , bodybuilder and also a singing teacher.
